The aim of this international conference was to provide a forum for the world's leading scientific and technical communities to interact and address the main issues and the key challenges related to all aspects of mining, minerals and metallurgical industry in the beginning of the 21st century. As a result industry's efficiency and sustainability can be improved, environmental and health impacts can be assessed in measurable terms through the establishment of appropriate indicators, and therefore consumption of mineral resources can be rationally reduced.

The 125 papers presented at this conference were organized in thematic units, covering the following broad subjects and areas: Advances in Geotechnics & Geomechanics, the Role of Geophysics in Mineral Resources Management including Environmental Applications, Geostatistics and Stochastic Modeling in Mineral Resources Management, Advances in Mineral Processing - Hydrocarbon and Gas Exploration, Advances in Extractive Metallurgy, Advanced Mine and Quary Management Technologies, Sustainable Development and LCA Studies in the Raw Materials Sector, Advances in Solid Waste Management, Environmental Impact and Risk Assessment in Mining and Waste Disposal Areas, Advances in Revegetation and Soil Decontamination including Field Studies. Generation, Prediction and Control of AMD, Advances in Decontamination and Groundwater Protection, Resources Management, New Technologies, Developments and Products.

The next conference will be held in Hania, on the Greek island of Crete, from 25th to 27th September 2006.
