The first Ampelos Symposium was held in Santorini in 2003. Many conditions have changed since then with regards to the world wine economy. Various trends have developed in the vineyard and in winemaking practices, which are both greatly influenced by wine marketing strategies adopted for better exploitation of wine production.

The second Ampelos Symposium followed on from the outstanding success of the previous one and focused on specific problems and opportunities that led to premium quality grape growing and wine making.

The aim of this second Ampelos Symposium was to present the latest scientific, technical and market information to the attendants by providing the opportunity for fruitful discussion between scientists from around the world, wine industry representatives as well as wine journalists oenophiles who would participate in the symposium. The main object was the evaluation of the soil-climate-variety combination in each vineyard and the exploitation of this potential via vine-growing/winemaking techniques responsible for the specific flavor of the wines of each region. Finally special attention was given to the market strategies that can be adopted.

Program areas included regional viticultural environments, terroir, precision viticulture, variety originality, vine stress physiology, ecologically sound grape and wine production methods, flavor development, wine economics, wine marketing, wine sensory attributes, the genetics of grape and wine production, vineyard mechanization, wine aroma defects, flavor adjustment in the vineyard, and wine sensory analysis.

A trade exhibit as well as wine tasting of specific varieties took place alongside the symposium

Santorini island was chosen to be the Symposium location of the "Ampelos 2006" Santorini International Symposium, because as well as being one of the most beautiful and unique places in the world, it has a tradition 3,500 years in vineyard cultivation and the art of wine production. The grapevines ("ambeli" to the local people) on Santorini have a characteristic flavor thanks to the special ecological conditions of this volcanic Aegean island.

The organizers of the "Ampelos 2006" Santorini International Symposium on Grapevines invited viticulturists, wine makers, scholars and practitioners from all related fields to share their knowledge, views and opinions and to enjoy the rich social program of the Symposium in the perfect setting of the famous island of Santorini. We are confident that all our delegates enjoyed a stimulating and challenging Symposium at the beginning of the glorious Santorini summer.
